I Am Upgrading!

by Pat on September 8th, 2011 at 2:48 pm

MOVIN’ ON.

Life is ever about learning and growing.   My blog name Passionate Wellness Entrepreneur was just too long and cumbersome.

I am learning to let go of all the extra clutter that holds me back as I grow my home business.   As I age I am realizing more and more that life can be way too short and time is flying by faster and faster.

I have watched friends succumb to health challenges before they ever got to see their grandchildren.

I have watched people go to work, come home, sit around and just let life pass them on by.

I want to live my life to the fullest.  When you do that, stuff and clutter just are not necessary.   My blog named felt a little like clutter to me.

To live life to the fullest you need good health.

Having good health is simple.  Eat the natural foods that God put here on the earth, and supplement with natural products for may be is missing from our messed with food nowadays.   Drink lots of fresh water.  Love those around you and forgive easily.  Not forgiving and holding grudges can sure mess with your long term health.

Living life to the fullest means having some fun along the way.  Find ways to even make your work fun.  You might as well as you are there 40 hours every week.  If it is a boring job then find ways to make it fun and put a smile on your face while you do it.

Next if you are healthy and you live long enough you get to retire from your JOB

Having enough income for retirement is also available even if you are like me and did not save enough in retirement funds over the years.  There are so many good home based income producing opportunities in the world today.  Find the one that matches your personality and interests and go for it with all the drive and passion that you can.

Find a mentor or a coach that will kick your butt until you get moving and learn the skills to be successful in the one you choose.  Just research carefully to make sure you have a legitimate real secure company that you are joining.

I found one with a great product, income, heart and purpose.

I take anti-aging products so I have mental and physical energy to make life and business happen.

This Grandma is keeping up with the times.  So come on over to my new site.

Home Business Lessons From the Kitchen Floor

by Pat on August 25th, 2011 at 7:05 pm

Are you a procrastinator?

Do you do a job the quickest you can rather than the most thorough you can?  Do you say, “this will do for now and later I will do it right?

Well I tend to do both of the above at times and had it reinforced to me as I was scrubbing the kitchen floor.  We have lived in our house for over 19 years.  Why the contractor ever put in white linoleum in the kitchen I will never know.  Well actually probably because it makes the room look nice and bright.  That was one of the things that helped me like this house. It had a nice, bright, large kitchen that was so inviting when I walked in.

Well after 19 years, four children, 4 grandchildren and loads of company, you can imagine what the floor looks like now.  You add to that the fact that I have  been using a Swiffer mop for the last while (only giving it a lick and a promise so to speak) and you will know why I decided that sprucing the floor up meant getting down on my hands and knees and scrubbing it the good old fashioned way.

So that is what I did this week and here are the lessons I learned from my floor.

Firs t is that any job that you do over and over again in a quick and fast manner without taking much c a re, will probably come back to haunt you.  It took a lot of scrubbing to get the ground in dirt removed from the old white floor because it wasn’t looked after properly on a regular basis since I was only it that quick wash just with the mop.

I took that thought and looked at some areas of my business.  I thought about things I am doing quickly just to get them done, without doing them thoroughly and therefore what would be more effectively.  I can now make changes to improve these areas.

What areas of your life might need more dedication or more  precise work to help them operate more successfully?  It doesn’t have to be a business item.  It could be how you do relationships.  Is there a relationship where you are just giving it a ‘lick and a promise.’  When stated that way, we all can probably find ones that we could improve.  I can sure think of a couple of mine.

The next lesson I thought about was that to do a thorough job of something large, it is better to tackle one section at a time.   This really helped me stay focused on getting each smaller area as clean as the last so I would end up with a good job across the entire floor.

So I thought about what part of my business I could break into smaller parts to improve each area separately so that the whole business would end up working better also.

Maybe you can think of an area of your life right now that seems overwhelming to you or definitely needs some change.  How could you break it down into smaller sections so you can see progress in one area before moving on to the next?  This can instantly help take away the feeling of overwhelm.

Thirdly I noticed that breaking the floor into sections to work on helped me stay focused on getting the whole task done, even when my arms started to get tired from the continual scrubbing and I felt like giving up.   I had to finish the whole floor making it look equally clean or it would look funny and would be embarrassing to say the least.  So doing a smaller section at a time, meant I could celebrate that section as finished and even take a very short break and get a drink of water or little snack if I needed to, before resuming with full energy.

So even though I was getting tired, I stayed on task and motivated by the contrast of seeing the sparkling white floor reappear in each section.

Can you see the contrast in colour. Quite a contrast on an old worn out floor from using the Swiffer mop compared to a good old fashioned elbow grease scrub. Focused and diligent work made the difference.

Working on the floor has helped me lay out a bit of a plan for making some changes in my business that will make it smoother and more efficient.  So in line with this thought I am changing the name of this blog/website.  This will be the last post under the long and cumbersome name of Passionate Wellness Entrepreneur.

As I am a baby boomer grandma I am changing my website name to include the words “Grandma Pat.”  Watch for the final choice of wording.

What Patterns Are Running Your Life?

by Pat on August 22nd, 2011 at 1:13 am

What programs do you have running you?

We have had 3 Japanese students staying with us this week in a short term homestay. I have had a lot of fun showing them some of the sites around the city.

I have also noticed something about myself having them here.   I noticed I like to get everything ready in the kitchen before inviting them to come for breakfast or dinner. So I got to thinking about why I am like this.

I have always been a do it yourselfer, as I find I can usually get a lot more things done faster by myself than if someone is helping me.  At least that is the reason I have been telling myself, but now I am wondering if perhaps there is more to it than that.  Of course when you get people helping you they don’t always do it exactly the way you want.  But I am not a perfectionist so I don’t think that is the reason, but I will admit that I do like to have control over a situation.

The more I think why I always have to have as many things as ready as possible before any company walks in the door and not just these students is that I don’t like people watching me work.  So I was thinking about this and wondering why this would bother me.  What is the big deal if they see me cut up the fruit, or make their sandwiches for their lunch bags?

Most of what we do and the decisions we make are from patterns of living that we have had for a very long time.  They say that 50% of how we react and view things is in place by the time we are 4 years old, and another 30% set in place by the time we are 8 years old.  So 80 % of how we view ourselves in relation to the rest of the world and how we unconsciously think about things is set in our patterns of thinking and reacting by 8 years old.

I wonder what happened in my world before I was 8 that might have triggered this pattern of getting all the work done on my own without anyone watching.

Is it that I don’t like suggestions of how to do it differently that might come up with others there?  Is it that I just want to prove that I am competent enough to get it done by myself?   Or is it that I am always in a hurry and just want to move quickly without interruption?  Could it be a combination of all of them?

So now I am thinking of how this extends to other areas of my life that I have not been as aware of.   For as the saying goes, “how we do anything, is how we do everything”    So I am sure there are other areas where this shows up and I need to be thinking about them to see if it is serving me well to keep this pattern or not.  For example, in the kitchen it may be handy to quickly get things done by myself. But in my home business and building a team of partners, it might be a lot wiser to be sharing the work with others and not trying to do it all myself.   Also if others that are newer at the business are working alongside of me, they can learn from me easier and I can learn more by teaching them.

What areas of your life do you notice that the patterns you have in place are not helping you be as productive as you would like to be in your work or business?

-Does your family of origin have a negative mindset about something that you have grown up with that is now hindering you from being as successful as you would like.

- Are you always late? Are you trying to cram so much in that you just cannot make it to appointments, or do you not value the person you are meeting enough to get there on time?

If you identify a problem pattern, then you have the ability to make the decisions to change how you think about it.

Change can be uncomfortable.  That is one of the reasons we resist it and like to stay in our old comfort zone of patterns.  But remember if you change to a much more productive mental attitude or more efficient way of doing something then it can be like a burden is lifted off of you.  But that burden will stay there as long as you don’t make a change.

Are you taking charge and taking control of your future, or are you just going through the same old routine day in and day out?

So join me in a little reflection this week and see what you might want to put on the top of your list to start improving about yourself.   I know you will be glad you made the effort.

Life And Business Lessons I Learned While Painting

by Pat on August 18th, 2011 at 4:05 am

Life and Business lessons I learned while painting.

I took a break from writing in the blog for two weeks as we did a painting marathon at our house.  We had a tight window of time between a Japanese Homestay student going and new ones coming, that we could empty furniture out of many of the rooms and paint them.  It had not been done in many years and was well overdue.   Also, our painter friend was available and willing to come and do multiple rooms if I pitched in and helped.

I found that in some ways it was actually relaxing to be doing mostly physical work in the last two weeks.  It was a complete change from my talking to people via phone or emails about our awesome nutritional products or a work from home business.  It was surprising that the hard work of moving furniture and going up and down the ladder constantly was somewhat restful.  But remember the old saying that “a change is as good as a rest”  was made for a reason.  While painting I had a lot of time to think and realized that the saying that “how you do anything is how you do everything" is also true”

So here are some lessons I learned while painting.  In painting, it is very important to make a COMPLETE plan before you start.   We didn’t do this and it costs us some money.  I originally was only going to paint two bedrooms and the other key main areas of the house such as hall, living room and family room.  Well, when you spruce up the main areas, suddenly other things don’t look quite as good.  So we decided to carry on and paint the laundry room, den, master bedroom.  If we had made a good plan from the start, we would have purchased the big 5 gallon pail instead of  ending up with multiple cans of the same colour.  We decided that for future potential sale of the house a neutral colour in most rooms would be a good idea and as we progressed ending up buying more of the same paint as the painting project grew larger.

Second lesson is once you start a big project there is no point giving up until it is finished.  Working with a partner really helps you stay focused.  As we got going day after day my knee started to give me trouble and I was very tired due to extra commitments.  I had some meetings preplanned before the paint project was decided that took me out 2 evenings and up quite early on another morning.  I had to have the rooms cleared of excess furniture and ‘stuff’ and dust bunnies removed ready for the painter to start each morning.  So by day 5, I was getting pretty burned out.  If I had not been working with someone I would have taken a complete day off about then, or even stopped the project completely at that point with the thought of coming back to it later  - someday.  Of course we all know that those 'somedays' take a long time to happen.

But working with a partner can keep that from happening as the other person helps you keep the focus.  They show up and start, so you join them. Especially the painting partner I have.  He doesn’t even stop for coffee breaks.  Thankfully it was my house so I could sneak away and get a cup of tea if I wanted to.  In any big project it is good to have help so get that lined up before you start.

The next lesson I learned is that making a mistake is not the end of the world and you can usually fix it or make an adjustment.   Well you can imagine what some of my mistakes might have been.   Like turning to talk and bumping the wall with the paint brush that had white baseboard paint of it.  Or while cutting in down by the carpet needing to stand up to move and stretch my sore leg and accidentally bumping the paint container.   We also had a bedroom where we were using some great paint leftover paint from a different project and were running out on the second coat.  We sent my husband to the store to buy some extra paint and none of us noticed that they gave him a different based paint.  Well it didn’t take the tint well and it made interesting colour blotches along the way.  At first we thought it was us, but eventually found the problem.  Home Depot reimbursed us, but we had to paint that room one more time.  So I was reminded once again to pay attention to details as they really matter.

Another lesson is that I also noticed that as I did the painting over and over, I found quicker or more efficient was to do it.  It surprised me that after a number of days I was getting really good at doing a straight edge where the colour of the walls met the trim.  Practice really does help make perfect.  So in areas of business that I know I am a little weak right now, I just need to have focused consistent practice to improve.  That is encouraging.

I also learned that it is a good idea to declutter along the way and not leave it until you decide to paint every room.  Letting go of unnecessary things in life can really help.   As I have been cleaning out rooms getting ready for painting I have been looking at things we have had for years and saying is this important to us now and do I really want to put it back in the room?  It is amazing how often the answer was no.  It is so liberating to get rid of extra stuff and I even made some money getting rid of a few things on Craig's list.  The house got a facelift and I feel like I am starting fresh again too.  Clutter can sure hold you back.   ‘Stuff’ in a house needs to be kept organized.  It needs to be dusted.   It takes up space.  I cannot believe how open and fresh our house feels now that I have let go of some ‘stuff’.   So I got to thinking about what 'stuff' needs to changed or be released to simplify my business and I have some ideas to implement.

So here is a recap on some valuable life/business lessons.

-Stop and plan out the whole goal or job before you start.  Make the decisions at the beginning so you have a clear picture where you are headed.   Then make sure you have the things in place that match your plan.

-Don’t give up when the going starts to get hard.  It is so rewarding when you hang in there and get things complete.  This is good advice for anyone starting out with their own home business as it takes awhile to get a good smooth pattern going.

-Practice does make perfect.  If you are not good at something, don’t stop.  Just look and see how you can do it simpler and better and then practice the new way next time.

-If you make a mistake it is not the end of the world.  Just be creative and fix it.  Sometimes what seems a mistake ends up in being a great improvement.

-Have a partner or someone you can work with or at least bounce ideas of off.  It helps keep you encouraged and motivated.

-Keep the clutter out of your life.   It helps take a burden off of you and frees up your time and your mental energy for the really important things.

I am feeling really young and energetic these days so next I just might even tackle more decluttering in the basement and see how it helps me learn more wise business points along the way.

What Does Everyone Really Want In Life?

by Pat on August 4th, 2011 at 10:09 am

What is it that everyone wants in life?

It is to be loved and recognized as having some significance or purpose here on earth.  We lump all this into the generic and casual statement that everyone wants to be happy.

If I was to go around a room and ask everyone in it what made them happy, I would actually get a whole list of varying responses.

For some it would be to go on vacation.  For another person it would be to have a baby.  For someone else it would be to get a promotion, or earn a certain amount of money. The list of possibilities is endless

So now our general thought of being happy has changed into more a goal list.  Goals are great as they can get you moving.  But they can also be scary.  We can back away from them as they can mean hard work, or we can jump right at them to get them done.  It often depends upon your personality and the programs or habits that tend to oversee how you show up in your life.

The program I have running in my mind right now that is slowing me down to get to my goal is indecision in a couple of areas.   So I am spinning my wheels as the saying goes.   As I look back over my life I have usually not been a big analyst when making major decisions.  I would often make them quickly and things would work out ok.  But then there are the times I made the decision quickly without reviewing enough data, and it definitely came back to haunt me.

You see one of my quicker decision stories goes like this.  Some of you will remember 1981 when the interest’s rates on Mortgages went to 18 %.  We borrowed a fairly large sum of money against the equity in our home and had partnered with friends to build 20 houses in a land development in California.  We kept some of the money back to use as the mortgage payments while the houses were being built and sold and we would get our money back.  So the point of this was to use the banks money, and not our own and end up making a profit.

That is right when the interest rates went sky high. The land had been purchased but now there was no point in trying to build the houses as no one would buy with the rates so high.  So our year or so of kept aside, Mortgage payment money went by and we had to start making payments ourselves.  For the short period of time when the rates were the highest, our mortgage payment was my husband’s entire take home pay.  Needless to say we totally stopped shopping for anything except the very basics of food.

I looked around for what I could do to help earn some money with 2 children ages 2 and 4 at home.  I decided to do a family daycare for that next year to pay for our basic bills.

Thankfully the rates went down again, and I was able to stop the daycare just before our third child was born a year later.   It took a few more years though before our partners were able to get rezoning and built and sold townhouses on the property instead of larger single family homes that wouldn’t sell.  We did get our initial investment back, but we had paid interest on the borrowed money for over 5 years.

It was one of the decisions that we put in our file marked “Get a lot of input from smart people and take a better look at the whole economy before investing in anything to do with Real Estate.”   The ironic twist to this story is that we were the last ones to join in and make it so the group had enough money for the project.  If we had not joined in, the project may have fallen through.   If we had had more wisdom at the time, we could have helped not only ourselves, but our friends and partners also have less financial stress for those 5 years.

So I know that my decisions about work, goals and money can have an impact on so many lives, not just my own.  My desire right now to be the CEO of my own business venture is of course to help look after my own family’s needs as my husband is on long term disability.  Secondly it is to grow a large group of committed partners that have an interest in improving their own health and buying natural supplements from a company that uses its profits in a Give for Real program to feed nutrient dense food technology to children in Orphanages.  30,000 children were helped last month.  The goal is 100,000 children for this year so I feel that partnering wtih this company is a good decision.

Now even though we had made a wrong timing decision on the construction of houses we did learn from that adventure.

-We found that you could find creative ways to eat cheaply and still properly if you were really serious about it.

-We learned as a family many  way to have lots of fun without spending a lot of money.

-We found out that when you do things God’s way you get blessed.  We did not have enough money to even live on but we continued to give 10% to the church as we knew it was the right thing to do and through this whole time all ours needs were met.

-We learned hope and endurance.  The project had to change to fit the economic times, but it was eventually finished in about 5 years.   Our partners never gave up on their dream.

-We learned that it is great to have a community of friends that help each other out in time of need.  So many people blessed us with clothes for our kids etc.

So I will go back to the first couple of sentences.  What is it that everyone wants?  It is to feel loved, cared about and significant.  To live life and be happy.  We all want to have a sense of purpose in our lives.  Our decisions can affect whether we are finding it or not.

Have your found your sense of purpose yet?  If not, then maybe your reading this blog can bring you closer to finding a sense of purpose for yourself.  I am looking for a team of people who love to be their own boss.  People who are leaders by nature.  People who just have to jump in and make a difference when they see a problem. People who would like to grow a business that can change their health, change their life and change the lives of malnourished children as well.

If this matches a burning desire within you, then come join our team now. We would love to have you.
